Needle minders are one of those sewing room accessories that look like they should be complicated to make — but they’re not. You need a flat-back button cover kit, a magnet, and a scrap of your favorite fabric. That’s it.

I first showed these in my Hexagon Pincushion tutorial and the questions came flooding in, so here’s the full walkthrough, in only 3 minutes!

What You’ll Need

How to Make It

  1. Place your fabric centered, face-down on the rubber base
  2. Place the button cover on top, top-side-down
  3. Adjust the fabric — center it before moving on
  4. Add the magnet
  5. Place the button back with the lip edge facing up
  6. Press with the tool, flat-side up — listen for the click
  7. Check that the edge is even all the way around underneath
