The Almondine Bag

I searched for this bag pattern everywhere. I really did.

I had a vision: a drawstring bag with an almond-shaped base — not round, not square, but that elegant pointed oval shape that gives a bag a completely different silhouette. I dug through Etsy, Pinterest, pattern shops big and small. Nothing. So I did what any slightly obsessed quilter does: I sat down and designed it myself.

The result is the Almondine Bag, and I’m so excited to finally share it with you.

What Makes This Bag Different

Most drawstring bags have a rectangular or rounded bottom. The Almondine has an almond-shaped base —  that gives it this beautiful, curvy silhouette. It stands on its own. It looks intentional. It’s the kind of bag that makes people ask “where did you get that?” and you get to say “I made it.”

But the real magic is in the construction.

The almond base attaches in two stages while the bag is still completely flat. You’re not wrestling a tube of fabric into position or trying to ease a circle into a cylinder. Everything happens while it’s easy to handle. Then one continuous U-shaped seam closes the sides and secures the base points — and suddenly you have a bag.

Once you understand how it works, you’ll want to make one in every fabric you own.
